Description

Twenty percent of U.S. homes rely on a septic system and fifteen percent of the population relies on a private well as their primary source of drinking water. Ensuring that these systems function correctly is essential to providing safe waste disposal and clean drinking water for millions of Americans. Yet unlike municipal water systems, there typically is no standard safety protocol for using private water systems after a disaster occurs. The National Environmental Health Association worked with subject matter experts and national partners to develop resources for communities and homeowners to facilitate recovery. A general overview of the problem, the resources NEHA created, and their use in the field since will be discussed.
