Jonathan Yoder is the Deputy Branch Chief and water preparedness and response coordinator for the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch in the National Center for Emerging Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this role, he works to develop and coordinate waterborne disease outbreak and response activities, including developing resources, tools and guidance for state and local health departments. These include the Drinking Water Advisory Communication Toolbox and the Emergency Water Supply Planning Guide for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities. Jonathan’s areas of expertise include waterborne disease outbreak investigations, infectious disease surveillance, and building waterborne disease capacity in state and local health departments. Previous work includes summarizing epidemiologic data on waterborne disease outbreaks and pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and the free-living amebae Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia and Naegleria fowleri. He has participated in or led investigations of waterborne disease and outbreaks associated with drinking water and recreational water, including Cryptosporidium in drinking water and pools, Naegleria fowleri in tap water, and multistate outbreaks of Acanthamoeba keratitis associated with contact lens wear. Jonathan has worked in waterborne disease outbreak and emergency response since joining CDC in 2003 including work with the Illinois Department of Public Health assisting local health departments with disease surveillance and outbreak investigations. In 2006, he began coordinating CDC’s Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System and CDC response to waterborne disease outbreaks, including investigations and response activities at local, state, and federal public health agencies. He deployed to support CDC’s Ebola response activities in Liberia and Sierra Leone during 2014 – 2015 and CDC’s hurricane response activities in US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in 2017.
