Description

The increasing global threat of emerging and re-emerging vector borne diseases and pests causing food borne illnesses poses a serious public health problem.  To manage these pests requires an integrated approach, known as integrated vector/pest management (IVM or IPM).  This approach includes understanding information about pest's presence at Geo-spatial level in real-time for early intervention to mitigate public health threats thus improving quality of life and minimize social disparity issues fostered by pests.  Without it, the complex pest issues in ever increasing global commerce and rapidly changing climate facing our world cannot be effectively dealt with.  The information presented here is a good quality Geo-referenced data sets on pest presence, relative abundance, prevalence, damage, habitat, environment etc., that can allow accurate spatial analysis important for timely decisions to effectively plan and implement IPM/IVM programs thus making the communities healthy.  The data can be used in advocacy, social mobilization and legislation; collaboration within the public health and food safety sectors, and with other sectors; integrated approach to pest/pathogen control; and evidence-based decision making.  This presentation will provide an insight on one of the emerging cloud/SaaS based, geo-spatially enabled software technologies designed to enable the food safety and the vector management professionals in collecting and analyzing pest management data, and then providing integrated and definitive solutions to promote health and well-being of communities.
