Bio

My life began to change on 9/12. The entire world changed on 9/11 but on the day after, at a beautiful venue in Estes Park, Colorado, I heard the first presentation on climate change that got my serious attention. I had been somewhat uninterested (disengaged) prior to this time. After this talk I began to look definitively at the data, it soon became apparent that this was a major problem and required serious attention. In fact, as a public health official and as an environmental health scientist I felt and feel a moral imperative to alert others regarding this concern. That climate change is the “Environmental Health Problem of the 21st Century” is not hyperbole it is a simple statement of fact. What we do or don’t do in this decade will affect life on the planet for many decades. Prior to this I had worked controlling air pollution for many years for the Ste of Utah, Salt Lake county and in private practice. On the day before 9/11 I had been in Martin’s Cove Wyoming, remembering important lessons from history. This is a sacred spot in Utah history. About 1500 immigrants had been traveling to Salt Lake City from Iowa, most of them walking and pulling handcarts, and were trapped there in 1856. Bogged down by early snows. Fortunately, a group of retuning missionaries had passed them on the trail and brought word of their plight. The Response was immediate, significant, cooperative and comprehensive; it saved many lives. These elements need to be incorporated into a successful plans and actions to address climate change and will have the same result. An additional significant event occurred in 2011 when I received a liver transplant. This has enhanced my gratitude for my fellow human beings.
