Description

A bold, comprehensive framework and systematic approach is required to achieve resilient Alaskan communities given changes in environmental conditions driven by climate change. In January 2019 Alaska will inaugurate a new Administration and the 31st Alaska State Legislature. Initiatives are needed to foster resilient Arctic communities as well as to address changes in environmental conditions caused by sea-level rise, erosion of coastal and riverine areas, and areas experiencing melting of permafrost. What started out as an international effort by 8 nations coming together as the Arctic Council is now expanding to other areas of regional collaboration. One of these innovations is creating healthy, sustainable communities in Circumpolar North countries. Oil and gas, maritime navigation, and fisheries are three of the economic sectors most affected by warming from climate change. These sectors drive the Alaskan economy.
